From the supplier: The Jerry Lewis Telethon managed to raise $45.8 million for muscular dystrophy victims inspite of the controversy surrounding the event. Criticism stems from the stereotypic portrayal and attitudinal barriers surrounding muscular dystrophy victims. Equal Opportunity Commission Chmn Evan Kemp heads the criticism. Critics also wish to limit the role of children in the telethon since most of the victims are adult.

Equality not pity
It was published in 1992, but many issues raised by this article remain conveniently unaddressed by the MDA.

For instance, the organization continues using the term "Jerry's Kids" to describe the MDA 'poster children'. Such labeling occurs despite the fact that these people are not solely their disability. Plus, people with disabilities recede from his view of what is 'valid' and 'important' when we do grow up.

MDA has supposedly added coverage of adults during their telethon, but the focus remains obsessed with kids, and therefore telling of their ongoing prejudices against my people. Under the guise of help, the organization shamefully encourages the public to view all people with MD/disabilities in general as helpless children.

Because children cannot vote and/or pay taxes in America, this ultimately encourages the population to talk down to us and not treat us as equals.

Former MDA poster child-turned disability rights activist Laura Hershey came to her own current politics after recognizing that Jerry only loved his kids when we played the 'victim'. He does not want to concede that people with MD are adults working in the workplace and affordable healthcare barriers inside the United States are much more damaging.

While the telethon itself once was a revolutionary event (during the 1960's when publicly admitting a family member or friend had a disability was shocking) the MDA Labor Day telethon has calcified into a stereotype.

Attitudes are the real disability.

Excerpt: Charles Jeremy Lewis (born October 21, 1934), an American politician, has been a Republican member of the United States House of Representatives since 1979, representing the 41st District of California. He is currently the ranking Republican member on the House Appropriations Committee. He served as its chairman during the 109th Congress. Lewis was born in Seattle, Washington. In 1952 he graduated from San Bernardino High School in San Bernardino, California, where he captained the swim team and was a basketball star; his basketball jersey was later retired. In 1956 he received a B.A. from UCLA. After college, Lewis was in the insurance business. He was a member of the San Bernardino School Board from 1964 to 1968. He was on the staff of Congressman Jerry Pettis in 1966. He was a member of the California State Assembly from 1969 to 1978. In January 1974, he ran in a special election for the California State Senate, losing to Democrat Ruben Ayala. In the campaign, Ayala noted that two-thirds of the $130,000 that Lewis raised came from 43 donors 22 of whom were Sacramento lobbyists. In November 1978, Lewis was elected as a Republican to the 96th United States Congress, in what was then the 37th Congressional district, with 61 percent of the vote.
